Media Interview:
Handling requests, deciding
whether to take part, why “off the record” does not exist, rights
and responsibilities of interviewees, how dynamic s of interviews
shift, what makes the media call.
02. Preparation &
Performance in the Media Interview:
“Live” & recorded,
print/radio/TV/phone, clarity of purpose, asserting your status, how
a question’s first word determines how hard the interviewee works,
timing, length of answers, how to dress, awareness of surroundings,
(practice with video review).

Understanding the Interviewer:
Personality types,
handling them, anticipating and inducing questions, what may happen
to your answers, why there is less to fear than you think.

media:
Local, regional and national
media: their connections, audiences and priorities, how ownership
and technology changed their ways, why even the seasons influence
story selection. Learn their internal workings, needs and
objectives, and how to support them.
05. Know your
message:
The importance of a
consistent message: why your vision, mission and values ought to be
reflected in each media encounter, when to say “I don’t know,” why
an interviewee always has the upper hand, how to “spoon feed” the
media.
06. Know your
protocol:
Using the company’s media
policy, examples of media situations are tested and practiced.
07. Focus Pocus:
Sum up your message in media
releases, how to attract media to your cause or event, how to help
media with visuals, angles and treatments.
08. The Media Plan:
How to prepare a strategy for
raising the profile of an individual or organization, how to set
media relations priorities and implement them, including when to “do
it yourself” or “call in the professionals.”
